Pneumonia in Children: Symptoms and Treatment

Pneumonia in children, the symptoms and treatment of which are described below, most often presents as focal pneumonia, developing as a complication of an acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) on the 5th-7th day. The development of pneumonia is indicated by:

  • Signs of general intoxication – fever of 38°C and above, chills, headache, lethargy, loss of appetite, and in infants – regurgitation and vomiting.

  • Respiratory symptoms – cough, initially dry and unproductive, later becoming wet, shortness of breath, and bluish discoloration of the nasolabial triangle. Sometimes, retraction of the intercostal spaces during breathing is noticeable.

Segmental pneumonia in children has an acute onset, initially presenting with intoxication symptoms such as fever, seizures, and confusion. Cough and other respiratory symptoms typically appear on the 2nd or 3rd day.

Lobar pneumonia is characterized by rusty-colored sputum, chest pain (often radiating to the abdomen), and a fever exceeding 39°C.

Sometimes, focal pneumonia in children may occur without specific symptoms. It can be suspected based on rapid fatigue, wheezing, increased heart rate during minor physical exertion, and an unnatural flush on the cheeks. In infants, early signs of pneumonia also include irritability, excessive crying, refusal to eat, lethargy, and prolonged sleep duration.
